Should I Be Concerned To See A Swollen Arm After A Flu Shot?

My husband had a flu shot and a pneumonia shot yesterday about noon, both in his right arm. to day his arm hurts, is swollen and hot to the touch. he also has flu like symptoms and is lethargic. He will be 70 years old next month. How should I treat this issue and should I be concerned? He has had several flu shots before without any problems,

Hi,

I agree with you that in most cases a flu shot does not cause any local reaction although slight swelling and low-grade fever are not unknown. In my clinical practice I have encountered the above reactions more frequently with Pneumonia vaccine (Pneumovax), more so if they are given together with the flu shot the same day and in the same arm. A cold fomentation at the site of swelling and paracetamol for fever should be helpful. In case the symptoms persist longer, it will be advisable to see your doctor.
