Should I Be Concerned About Frequent Burping And Pain In The Left Side Of The Rib Cage After An Open Heart Surgery?

Hi. I had open heart surgery 2 weeks ago. Quadruple bypass. Everything going well until I went to bed tonight. i developed pain in far left side of rib cage and lots of burping. I could feel burps coming from area of pain which lessened the more I burbed. Has lessened since I got out of bed but am afraid to lie down again. Should I be concerned?

Hello,

I would explain that your symptoms do not seem to be related to heart surgery.

As burping is present, it is suggestive of gastritis or gastro-esophagal reflux, probably related to the blood thinners that you are taking.

For this reason, I would recommend taking an antiacid or PPI (omeprazole, pantoprazole, etc.).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
