Should Atenolol Be Taken While Suffering From Diastolic Dysfunction?

I had been going to a cardiologist for 10 yrs, who always wanted me to come in once a year (not quite sure why), and had me on atenolol. My husband wanted me to switch to his cardiologist. Last week, I had an echo cardiogram with the new doctor because I was having mild chest pain and getting winded. After the test, the cardiologist said my heart was fine . Then when my test results were posted, it indicated mild left ventricular hypertrophy, grade 1 diastolic dysfunction. I was not scheduled to speak with the doctor, or any other follow up... Is the mild left ventricular hypertrophy, grade 1 diastolic dysfunction something that should concern me, or normal for a 60 yr old? Would it be fine to discontinue the atenolol, and not schedule any other cardiology visits unless I have a change?

hello,
i can understand your concern. you need not be too much worried about it.

left ventricular hypertrophy occurs as a consequence of hypertension and this further leads to diastolic dysfunction.
Mild Left ventricular hypertrophy and grade 1 diastolic dysfunction are not that much of a reason to worry in a 60 year old.
the only thing we are concerned is whether your blood pressure is normal or not. if it is normal you can continue same dosage of atenolol.
if blood pressure is higher than 130/90 we need to add another drug like a diuretic along with the medication.
if an ecg and stress test havent been done, i advise you to get it done.

Hope i have answered your query. Have a nice day
