Shin Starting From Knee To Ankle Swollen And Red,painful. Swelling In Front Of Leg. Remedy?

My shin, starting about three inches from the knee and following down to my ankle, is noticeably swollen and red. The skin is warm and it hurts to walk and to touch. If I rest it for some time the walking becomes more painful. The swelling is primarily concentrated on the front of my leg although there are tender, red spots on the side and back as well. It is my right leg although I had the same, but less severe, issue on my left leg approximately two weeks ago.

HI
Thank for asking to HCM
You can try some NSAID take a rest for couple of days, keep the foot in elevated position, if this does not work then see the ER, every thing will be alright it does not seems any thing serious, have nice day.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Your symptoms might be due to Cellulitis of leg or presence of DVT (deep vein thrombosis (blood clot in the veins).

A few blood investigations like CBP, C-reactive protein will help in establishing cellulitis due to infection. A doppler ultrasound examination will rule out the presence of DVT.

Momentarily, follow the below mentioned recommendations -
* Give rest to the involved leg
* Keep your leg in elevation to reduce the swelling
* Use elastic compression stockings
* Moist heat application over the painful, swollen areas
* Analgesics like Aleve or Advil will be helpful in resolving pain and inflammation

If your symptoms are not resolving with the above measures, consult an orthopedic surgeon for further evaluation and management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
