Shin Injured While Playing, Swelling, Pain In Toes, Knees, Difficult To Walk. Solution?

I suffered an impact injury to my shin playing football on Satuday (7th) - it was initially very painful but appeared to ease off in the proceeding 40mins. However after that the pain and swelling became worse and by Saturday eveing putting any weight on my leg was very painful. I managed to get some sleep and during Sunday the pain eased sslightly although the swelling remained. However during Tuesday the pain came back in my shin but also affecting my achillies and calf. By Wednesday I was struggling to move to foot without significant pain. It is on the outer shin, achillies, calf and goes into my toes and knee. Some swelling has returned and the pain is extremly bad if I try to point by foot/toes upwards. Walking is becoming more difficult and sleeping almost impossible?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
From history it appears that you might be having soft tissue injury, hematoma and even fracture of shin of tibia.
Go for x-ray and find out nature of injury.
Go for anti-inflammatory medicines.
Consult orthopedic surgeon and get examined.
Ok and take care.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on the description of symptoms, I suspect a soft tissue contusion along with hematoma formation. Anyway, an xray of the injured leg is mandatory to ruleout any bony injury.

The general treatment guidelines of your conditions is as follows -

* Rest to the injured part and don’t involve in activities which puts additional strain on the injured tissues.
* Ice packing should be applied for about 20 minutes once in every 2 hours.
* Use elastic compression bandage around the swollen area
* Elevation of the limb
* Analgesic & anti inflammatory medication like Advil or Aleve to reduce the pain and inflammation

If your symptoms are not resolving with the above measures, consult an orthopedic surgeon for further evaluation and management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
