Severe Pain Under Right Rib, Sensitive Skin, Swelling. Unable To Diagnose The Problem. Any Ideas?
I am having severe pain under my right rib. The skin is very sensitive and at times the pain on or under my right rib is so severe, that I can hardly move. I've been to the emergency in Jan. 2013 and they were unable to find a cause. I had several test done and they could not say what was the problem. I am still having the severe pains and don't know if it is serious or just a topical problem. I have no rash on my skin...I do feel little swelling in the affected area. Please help. By the way, this all started last year in October and it is just getting worse. First I thought it was shingles without the rash because the pain was also in my upper back from the spine.

Based on your symptoms, the most possible cause could be COSTOCHONDRITIS. This is nothing but inflammation of the junctions of ribs and the sternum (breast bone).
The treatment for this condition involves -
* Local heat or ice applications to relieve pain
* Anti inflammatory medications like Motrin or Aleve
* Avoiding contact sports and other activities that makes the symptoms worse.
* Local massage with pain killer gels
If there is no symptom relief with the above measures, Consult your treating physician and follow his advice.
