Severe Pain On Leg And Back. Serum Immunofixation Electrophresis Test Done. What Does Result Suggest? Cancer?

My mother had a severe pain on back & legs .Doctors tested thru Report & her ESR comes 107 after that they done a protein electrophoresis test where M Spike comes.
Now i have done her Serum Immunofixation electrophresis test done when comments are:
High Resolution serum protein Electrophoresis reveals the presence of a monoclonal gammopathy ( 'M' Spike) in gamma globulin region
Immunofixation Electrophoresis(IFE) identifies the 'M' Spikeas IgG ,Lambda
Polyclonal gamma to consist mainly of IgG,kappa and Lambda with fair amount of IgA

Pls confirm is this a cancer.

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Your description suggests that your mother has MULTIPLE MYELOMA, a form of Blood Cancer.

Your description points favouring Multiple Myeloma are
* Back pain - this is the commonest form of presentation
* presence of monoclonal gammopathy
* "M" spikes on electrophoresis

There are two types of Multiple myeloma - Kappa type comprising of 70% of patients and Lambda type comprising of 30%.

Generally, this follows a very slow course and will be mostly asymptomatic for many years. At times, it will be diagnosed accidentally only after producing a "Pathological fracture" in bones.

For a complete management, you have to consult a HEMATO ONCOLOGIST preferably.
