I had a trabeculectomy four weeks ago today and still having irritation and sensitivity to lights and sun. I also can't read or look at computer screens for long periods of time without getting headaches. This is the first surgery in my left eye, but not my first trabeculectomy; I had the surgery performed almost ten years ago on my right eye. At that time, I was in constant pain and the complete healing time was between 8-12 weeks before I would say I could see properly again. This difference this time around is that my doctor and I have not been seeing eye on my treatment or my healing time. I had to personally request pain medication the same day as the surgery (as he thought I wasn't suppose to experience any extreme pain after cutting into my eye); his surgery coordinator eventually called in a prescription for Tylenol 3 with codeine for the pain, but with no refills. I have also had to go back and forth with my STD (short term disability) claim manager and doctor about the fact that they believed I should have been able to return to work two weeks after my surgery-even after I reported to him my still having pain and not being able to see properly out of the left eye. Altogether he had me on four medications prior and after the surgery: prednisolone acetate; zymaxid; neomycin ointment; and cyclopentolate. After the first two weeks he discontinued the zymaxid and cyclopentolate; however I was advised to still take the neomycin ointment at bedtime and continue taking the prednisolone acetate every two hours as long as I'm awake. I really feel like my treatment and care is being comprised for the sake of just getting me back to work. I don't recall having to be stressed out about worrying about insurance issues or having to question the care I was getting from my doctor when I had the first surgery done. This might be a good time to state that my first surgery was done by another doctor who was national glaucoma specialist in the Washington. DC area. Today I am currently back to work on a modified schedule. I am only allowed to use the computer for 4 hours a day at work and work one non-computer related hour for a total of 5 hours of work-time. I had a follow-up appointment today, and still experiencing blurriness and irritation to lights and sun. My question is this: What is the average length of time to heal from a trabeculectomy for a person who has open angle glaucoma? I also want to state that I was 26 when first diagnosed with glaucoma and am now 34. Does age play a part in the overall healing process?
