Recurrent Problem Of Burning Sensation In Throat, Cough. Endoscopy Shows Gastric Erosion. Is There A Cure ?

My mother aged 57. She recurrently gets problem of burning sensation in throat . Sometimes cough too. 4 months back she started getting very little blood only in her first phlegm every day. So, we got her tested from ENT and Gastroenterologist . They prescribed a Complete Blood Count test, report of which is normal. After that Upper GI endoscopy is conducted and diagnosed as she has gastric erosions. They said after food in the night her gastro fluid is entering throat and causing minor burns.. thats it and told that is not serious. Gave 2 tablets a day one before food and one after food. She has been using these tablets for quite sometime. Blood traces in 1st phlegm stopped. Even burning sensation was almost cured. But, again last week, she a. experienced the same little blood in the phlegm on one or 2 days. b. Now one more complaint is that in the morning she feels her throat as very sweet. Please help us if it is something serious? or take it easy assuming these symptoms as simply due to gastric erosions. or any other tests to be undergone?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your Mother.
The condition she is suffering from is called Gastritis with GERD that is gastroesophageal reflux disease.
The correct treatment is as follows:
A PPI like Omeprazole.
Domperidone at 8 hourly interval to avoid reflux.
Small frequent meals of soft bland diet.
Review upper GI Endoscopy after 6 weeks of treatment.
Avoidance of stress and anxiety as these are major contributing factors.
Blood in phlegm in the morning can be due to forceful removal in the morning causing slight ulceration or can be due to post-nasal infection and so n.
ENT Endoscopy and VT scan of nose and sinuses can help to find out the cause and get treated accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant,
General Surgeon
