Recovery Time For Sprained Shoulder?

My 15 year old daughter Sprained her shoulder while playing a varsity basketball game last night. She was taken to the hospital and a grade one sprain was diagnosed and her arm was put in a sling, She will be going to an ortho dr. Tomorrow as suggested by the athletic trainer at the school. She had An x ray at the the hospital and there was no bone damage or separation of the shoulder joint. My question is she is trying out for the varsity softball team and has a good chance of being the starting catcher as a freshman. The tryouts are 4 weeks away but she works out everyday with a travelling softball team. How long will it take before she can return to throwing a softball and swinging a bat without risking injury? She has been working very hard on her throwing arm by doing long tossing with her coaches

hi,
Thanks for posting your query in Health Care Magic, i understand your concern.
If the X-ray revealed no bone injury or shoulder dislocation then shoulder sprain should take somewhere around 4-6 weeks to heal completely.
Meanwhile, let her continue wearing the sling and reduce movements of that hand and let it rest.
Getting back to softball practice before it heals completely is a bit risky and i would not suggest it.
Consult with the orthopedician and seek his advice on getting back to the team to play. Analgesics should relieve her of pain .
hope this helps, write back to us for further queries.
Wish her a speedy recovery and good health.
