Reason For Red Veins In The Eyes?

Dear Doctor,

My name is Nicole and I am a 23 year old female. I have recently been to the opticians as I started noticing small red veins within the white part of my eyes. The optician stated that I need to wear glasses as I am short sighted, she also made me aware that my eyes are a little dry. Since that appointment two days ago I have started to use artificial tears and taking supplements such as Omega 3, Cod liver oil and flaxseed oil. I feel as though I am a healthy person and have always ate a balanced diet and exercised regularly, not to mention I have always taken multi vitamins(never abused my body with nicotine or any other kind of drug). I don't drink except once in a blue moon and even then maybe only two glasses max three. I was basically wondering if these small red veins will fade in time or are they permanent and I fear that I will gain more.

Thank you, xx

Ophthalmologist 's  Response
Hello
It seems from the history that you are having dilated blood vessels on the white part of the eye.
This is called as hyperemia of the eye. Most of the times it is benign condition and may not require treatment.
However all cases require evaluation to find out the underlying cause and the common causes are chronic conjunctivitis, allergic conjunctivitis and dry eye.
Hence I advice you to consult your ophthalmologist for examination and treatment accordignly.

Thank you
