Protruding Knee Cap With Pain. Not Able To Exercise. Cure?

Hi I have a protruding Knee Cap which appeared about 12 months ago. Since this condition came about I have experienced a lot of pain and discomfort particularly when resting and relaxing. The pain is relieved by resting the affected leg in a position that keeps it straight. i.e. When sitting, supporting it, by putting my left heel on my right toe. This relieves the pain immediately. Sometimes this is not possible, when seated in an airplane, theatre or restaurant I have to suffer the discomfort or get up and move about. The condition does not affect me when exercising and generally speaking is not a problem when I am on the move. I have received physiotherapy by way of leg bending and strengthening exercises but I have to say that this does not seem to help and I am worried that doing these may possibly be harming rather than curing.

Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The protruding knee cap with pain is likely to be due to an inflammation in the knee joint. This could be related to an inflamed bursa or osteoarthritic changes. Direct examination will help in diagnosis.
