Pregnant, Pre-diabetic. Asked To Start Insulin. Is It Safe?

Hi, I'm 28 weeks pregnant, and am considered pre-diabetic, my numbers although steady throughout the day, are a little higher in the mornings ( I don't eat regular meals during the day, I mostly eat at night). My OB wants me to start injecting insulin as a precaution, and they've asked me to lose 50lbs. I don't agree. I've only put on 5 lbs since the beginning of my pregnancy, the baby is doing great and is healthy. I currently weigh 200lbs at 5'6 1/2. Should I take the insulin or no?

Hi,
Thanks for the query.
Usually insulin is not prescribed as precautionary measure.
You once go for glucose tolerance test and depending on the values you can know whether you have to use the insulin or not.
You can prevent excessive weight gain in pregnancy.
But drastic weight reduction in pregnancy is not advisable.
Try to regularize your diet schedule which is essential in pregnancy.

Take care.
