Pregnant Feeling Breathlessness, Palpitations, Dry Mouth. Allergy? Tested Negative For Gestational Diabetes

Hi, I m 7 1/2 months pregnant. All week at random times (while asleep, while sitting up watching tv, while driving) I have experienced periods of breathlessness, heart palpitations (beating as if I just finished sprinting), and my face and neck turns entirely bright red. A few times, like when I awoke from sleeping and while I was driving, my mouth seemed to dry out and I was dying of thirst. I was tested for gestational diabetes and results came back negative, and I know these to be signs of an allergic reaction , but I ve never been allergic to anything before. I m sort of baffled. And I m wondering if this is something that can wait for my OB appointment in two weeks or should I seek immediate medical attention?

Hello Maggie, I would be happy to help you with your question.

The symptoms you are describing include:
1. Breathlessness - a feeling that you cannot catch your breath
2. Heart palpitations - racing heart
3. Increased thirst / dry mouth

#1 is a very common symptom in pregnancy. It is called 'dyspnea of pregnancy'. #2 is not an uncommon complaint, but it should be brought to the attention of your doctor, especially if it is occurring with any regularity. If it is just one episode, then they will likely do nothing, but if it is recurrent, they might want to see you sooner. #3 is a bit more nonspecific and of the least concern. It may be that hydration is an issue, but it does not sound like an allergic reaction. So, call your doctor about the palpitations, but the other issues are likely of little concern.

I hope that this helps. Good luck and thank you for visiting.
