Pregnant, Advised Ultrasound For Cervical Cerclage. History Of Miscarriage, Found Partial Bicornuate Uterus. Is It Safe ?

Hello Dr. I am AAAA. I am 16 weeks and 4 days pregnant. My OB made a request for me to have an ultrasound so she could schedule me for a cervical cerclage as I have poor OB history with 2 miscarriages, an ectopic, and premature labor at 29 weeks where I had a CS and that was when my doctor discovered that I have partial bicornuate uterus. With my latest ultrasound, it says there "placenta is posterior grade 1, with inferior edge totally covering the OS". What does that mean? Is it still safe for my OB to do a cerclage when I am susceptible to bleeding because of the location of my placenta? Although I have had spotting the previous weeks but would only last for 2 days or so.

Hello
Thanks for writing to HCM

Your doctor has advised the right things. Due to bad obstetric history and history of miscarriage in 29 weeks, circlage is the option that prevents premature opening of cervix.
Since you have early pregnancy, placenta can move upwards . so repeated ultrasound is needed in such cases.
Normally placenta is away from the os. If it has covered it, then there is chances of bleeding during pregnancy because placental vessels get torn with the changes in cervix.

Take care
