Persistent Cough, Mucus For 4 Months. Treatment?

I have a persistent cough - bringing up mucus. It seemed to start with just a cold but have had the cough now for over four months. It occurs all day (not at night) but is worse first thing in the morning. Sometimes I feel a desperate need to clear my throat but really struggle to cough up the mucus, then manage to 'bark' it up. I am on no medication of any kind (other than HRT).

Hello and welcome to HCM,

I have understood your problem regarding cough and mucous.

Since it is four months you may have cough for different reasons and also the mucous.

But I suspect your cough may be due to reflux also. You need to do these:
1. Take a course of anti reflux medication like pantoprazole for two weeks before food. your doctor will know about these.

2. Take an anti allergy tablet like levocetrizine also in consultation with your doctor

3. Take only non oily, non spicy food

4. Keep your weight under control and do not immediately lie down after a meal

5. Do steam inhalation regularly

If your symptoms do not improve in a week or two of following the above religiously then you must get an Upper GI endoscopy, complete sputum and blood analyses and chest X ray and get back to me or any ENT doctor with the reports

take care and get well soon

regards

Dr Sriram Nathan
