Painful Lump On Knee. Treatment?

i would like to possibly find out what is wrong with my knee . i have this lump underneath it that causes me pain . my boyfriend seems to think that my knee may have once been dislocated and didnt set correctly but i have no recollection of there ever being any major injury to my knee. i have tried knee braces and over-the-counter pain killers but nothing has worked. it only really bothers me when i keep it bent for too long or if i bump it on something
