Painful Ankle, Swelling, Tingling In Foot And Ankle. History Of Fracture In Left Fibula, On Walking Boot For 6 Weeks. Normal?

Hi,
9 weeks ago I broke my left fibula. I wore a walking boot for 6 weeks (until 6/26/13). After 6 weeks I was told by the orthopedic dr. that the ankle was sufficiently healed and I could remove the boot. I was give a theraband and some exercises to do, which I have followed up on. Over these last 3 weeks by ankle continues to be painful and swells when I walk on it. Once I am home from work I keep it elevated but the swelling does not go down. Now, in addition to this I am experiencing tingling on the top, side and bottom of my foot & ankle. Is this normal?
thank you

hi,welcome to HCM
thanks for the query..
tingling and numbness is always a result of stimulation or irritation of the nerves or nerve endings..
as the orthopaedician confirmed that the fracture is healed and you have immobilised for 6 wks....
for you the cause of this could be due to swelling or theraband
which might be causing more pressure than it should which is causing swelling
and i think you are not overwt, donot have any coexisting medical illness and you have normal general health..
i suggest you to see the dr again and discuss about the problem
get well soon,bye

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

It is very common to have stiffness, swelling , tingling and numbness after a period of immobilization of the limb for a fracture.

These issues are generally SELF LIMITING and are TRANSIENT.

If your symptoms are not resolving or if they worsen , you may need further investigations.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
