Pain In The Ribs And Abdomen, Low Grade Fever, Diarrhea With Blood. Any Autoimmune Disease?

Phi, I have been having side pain by my ribs , pain along side of abdomen, also burning pain. My ua for the last 4 times has had bllod in it, now has bacteria and mucous. I have been running low grade temps of 99.7-11.2 on and off. 2x's in last week have severe belly pain with some small emesis and diarrhea and large amounts of blood after diarrhea. Had ct of abdomen and was negative for anything. Very fatigued. Starting to feel like a major complainer. Dr. Has ordered a cystoscope and to check my stool for different things. Have a rheumatology appt. at end of month for possible auto- immune disease, due to pains in ribs and possible inflammation. i take prilosec, also take vit.d, which has been low. Any ideas of what could be causing all this?? Ok I typed wrong. The temp is 100.2. Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi and thanks for the query,

The possibility of an infectious process going on is a priority to be eliminated in this case. A complete blood count to search for elevated or low white blood cells is needed. An erythrocyte sedimentation and testing for C reactive proteins to ascertain the degree of inflammation. Blood cultures, stool exam, stool culture and sensitivity tests. It could be appropriate first to a chest X ray and an abdominal ultrasound first.

It would be interesting knowing if you have had any HIV test done recently because it could have such symptoms. I suggest you visit an internist first. IN case of negativity, you then contact your rheumatologist.

Thanks and best regards,

Bain LE, MD.
