Pain in lower back, hips, abdomen. Surgery for diverticulitis to be done. Treatment?

I have been diagnosed with diverticulitis . 6 days in hospital. They require me to have surgery. My surgery is scheduled for end of August. I have terrible pain in my lower back and both sides of my hips and abdomen . I can t seem to releave it with ice or heat. Is this normal and should I be required to tell my doctor?
