Pain In Foot, Bothers While Weight Bearing, Tried Icing, Motrin, No Help. Any Thoughts ?

my daughter has been complaining of pain in her foot...she tells me it bothers her a lot with any weight bearing and she can feel the pain through out the top of her foot...I see very minimum swelling on the top of the foot and no bruising...it's not tender to touch and the pain minimizes with rest...she has been complaining about this pain for about 4 days now...ice and Motrin have not changed anything...any thoughts? Being a Friday eve, should I waste the ER's time?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Pain in the foot on weight bearing could be due to

* a stress fracture involving the metatarsal bones. This can be diagnosed by having an Xray of the involved area

* a sprain involving the ligaments of the tarsal bones which can be ruled out by an MRI scan of the foot.

As analgesics and ice therapy are not providing symptom relief, I suggest you to consult an orthopedic surgeon and follow the advice accordingly.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Milind Merchant's  Response
Hello,

I see that your daughter has a foot pain while walking and relieves on rest, this means it is mechanical nature of pain. By this I mean it will not be due to any injury , so no swelling can be expected,

More commonly children who have Flat foot have foot pain similar to the one your daughter is having.

A Flat Foot is a condition in which the arch of a normal foot is less or absent. this causes abnormal foot walking mechanics and causes foot pain.

To find whether she has flat foot or not, make her stand on the ground with both feet by side of each other and see the inner side of the foot, if only the ball of the great toe and heal touch the ground, then she has a normal arch of foot. If whole inner border of foot touches ground then she may have a flat foot,

Consult a orthopaedic foot surgeon in a non emergency basis,

I hope this was some help to you,

Dr Merchant
