Pain In Chest, Cough, Shoulder Blade Pain. What Is Wrong?

I have pain in my chest on the right side when I cough only. Also at the same time there appears to be pain just under my right shoulder blade when I cough also. I do not have a cough. I do not get this pain when breathing hard, and can walk no problem. I am 51 female. Gave up the fags in January 1st!!! No other symptoms really and I feel good apart from that. Thanks

Hello and welcome to HCM,

Pain in the chest and under the right shoulder when you cough suggests a pathology in the lungs.
A X-ray of the lung fields is required.
Pain during coughing can occur in number of conditions. Some of them are:
1. Involvement of the pleura is usually painful.
2. Besides involvement of the lung interstitium also causes pain. The interstitium can be involved in infections, inflammation, fibrosis, etc.
3. Chest pain could also be muscular pain in case there is previous history of trauma.

Consult a physician or pulmonologist for further work up.
Investigations e.g. X-ray chest and pulmonary function tests need to be done.

Thanks and take care
