Pain In Breast Going To Back, Sore And Crusty Nipples, Breastfeeding. No Help From Aloe Vera, Coconut Oil. Help

I am at my daughters, she is nursing her son, who is a month old now. She was told that he wasn't gaining weight fast enough. He is back to his birth weight now. He is still Jaundice and that has gone up since he was 8 days old. Her one big problem with nursing is that she has a lot of pain in the breast going into the back. It hurts so much she just cries. She also is having a lot of trouble with very sore nipples, we have been putting aloe vera, coconut oil, olive oil on them. Her nipples are very crusty. What can we do to help this? Can you help us please?

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Sore nipples, crusting of nipples and pain during lactation can be due to infection or skin lesion.
Infections are common during lactation.
Clinical examination of the nipples is required to look for evidence of infection.
Infection may be associated with pus discharge from the nipple(s).
In case discharge, it needs to be examined microscopically to look for infection.
If there is any evidence of infection, culture needs to be done to isolate the organism.
In case no discharge is present, skin lesion i.e. eczema needs to be ruled out.
Eczema is more itchy than painful thus ruling out its possibility.
However, clinical examination is necessary for diagnosis and hence treatment.

thanks and take care
