Overweight, Back Pain, Have Numbness On Soles, Neck Spinal Area, Constipation, Dizzy Spells. Had Different Diagnosis Of Disc Degeneration And Peripheral Neuropathy. What Should Be My Next Step?

Hi Doctors, I am 63 years of age. I am overweight and am suffering from back pain . My symptoms include burning numbing sensation on my soles, numbness in the neck spinal area, constipation , dizzy spells. I was diagnosed with disc degeneration (L2 to L5) by one doctor and recommended surgery. With a second opinion with another doctor I was advised it is peripheral neuropathy . What should I do? Please advise. Carmelina Rodrigues

Hello,

You are suffering from peripheral neuropathy apart from disc degeneration. You need to take vitamin B12. Numbess in the area of neck spine is possibly because of compression of spinal nerve roots which usually happens in cases of disc degenerations in some people. You need to supplement calcium and get treated for osteoporosis, which is a certain possibility. Please get examined for blood sugar levels to identify Diabetes mellitus and also get tested for thyroid function. Constipation can be caused by a variety of reasons one of which is hypothyroidism. Dizzy spells can be because of low blood sugar or low hemoglobin levels as in hypothroidism. Please also get a routine cardiac check up in view of your age and weight.

Take care
