On the bottom, outside edge of my foot about mid-way

On the bottom, outside edge of my foot about mid-way down I've developed a hardened area about 1/4" square(ish). This hardened area can be very painful and radiates pain from time to time. It feels similar to an open wound on my foot, but clearly is not.
