Nose Bleeds Only From Left Nostril, Dizziness. Taking Medication For Under Active Thyroid. Causes?

I have been getting a bloody nose over the past week - only on the left side. My house is a little dry but that doesn t usually bother me. As well I have been feeling slightly lightheaded and a little dizzy. I am currently on thyroid meds but the lowest dose for under active thyroid. My left gland is also swollen but I do not have a sore throat at all. I am a little concerned and wondering if I should go to the ER...

Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

Nose bleeds can often be due to respiratory infections, such as a rhinitis. When the nasal mucosa becomes inflamed, it can become fragile and bleed when you blow your nose or sneeze. Sometimes a nasal polyp can also cause bleeding from the nose.

The swelling of the gland in your neck could be due to the infection or inflamation in the nose. I would suggset that you can take an anti-histamine or anti-inflamatory medication to help subside the inflamation. You can also use normal saline nasal drops, which will prevent dryness of the nose (which can also precipitate bleeding) Avoid blowing the nose forcibly or picking on your nose.

If these simple measures don't seem to stop the bleeding, then I would suggest that you see a doctor for a nasal examination and further treatment.

Wish you all the best.

Regards,
Dr. Jonas Sundarakumar
