Non-stop Headache Along With Neck Pain, Nausea, Photophobia, Uncontrollable Crying, Buzzing/pulsing On The Left Side Of Head. Permanent Relief ?

I m AAAA , I live in Texas and I m 17. I ve been suffering from the worst non-stop headache of my life, along with neck pain , nausea , photophobia , uncontrollable crying, buzzing/pulsing on the left side of my head and I just continue to feel worse. I ve been to the emergency room twice because my dad doesn t have insurance and we can t afford a doctor. They told me I have a tension headache but I m convinced otherwise. It s gotten so bad, I don t even feel like myself. I ve tried everything that s supposed to help a tension headache, like meditation , heating pads, pain medication, ice, etc. I don t know how much longer I can handle this, please help.

Neurologist 's  Response
Hello,

Thanks for your query

Let me tell you that there are many causes of headache like migraine, cluster headache, tension headache, brain tumor/infection and so on. Note that migraine and tension headache are dianoses of exclusion, i mean the secondary causes need exclusion.

The cause of headache can be confirmed after an assessment by a neurologist which may/may not include scan. I think there is a strong possibility of migraine. If it turns out to be migraine,

You will benefit with

1. Acute attack: sumatriptan nasal spray, analgesics etc. Learn to avoid stress, lack of sleep, changes of food habit. Avoid coffee

2. Chronic treatment: one of the medicines _ valproate, topiramate, amitriptyline, propranolol may help

Your neurolgist will help guide you select a proper drug for you

Best wishes

With a headache combined with neck pain one must consider infections of the nervous system . You need to see a doctor who can perform a lumber puncture on you and if that is clear a CT scan. If it is an infective agent this is urgent. An EEG may also help to exclude migraine. Please get to ER as soon as possible and discuss this with them.
