The wearing off of cartilage is called osteoarthritis. It is a degenerative disease in which the cartilage of the joints slowly wears away and causes pain and difficulty in walking. Initially, the pain is controlled by pain killers and regular exercise. Certain movements and positions which increase damage to the cartilage should be avoided. Hyaluronic acid is a preparation which slows down the wear and tear of the cartilage. However, it does not halt the disease process but slows it down. In later stages, total knee replacement is the treatment of choice. You need to consult your orthopedician for clinical examination, investigations and management.
