Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is It Safe For A Cancer Patient To Be Near A Person Infected With Shingles?
My sister in law just found out she has shingles and I’m invited over for dinner tomorrow at her house but I have cancer and just finished my 5 th and final chemo last week and am doing internal radiation this week. Is it safe to be around here while I’m doing treatments ?
Shingles, or herpes zoster, is contagious, and in your case, in which your immune system is compromised, I would recommend avoiding being around her while she is having active lesions.
As soon as the shingles rash has resolved, it would be safe to be around her.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
