I have been on a statin drug for several years now. My doctor insists on it but I don t like what I hear about it. My cholesterol was never very high, just somewhat over 200. I have now lost significant weight and begun a better diet and exercise. I want to get off of this statin. What would you advise?

My internist prescribed a statin drug although my cholesterol is in a good range. Right away my liver hurt and I read the drug interactions that said this could happen. He should be aware that I have liver damage from a hepatitis C infection I fought off a seven years ago. I quit taking the drug after a week on it and I felt better right away. Should I tell him?

I was reading an article Medicine s magic Bullets written by Jeanie Lenzer and it has given me pause when it comes to statin like Lipitor for my elevated cholesterol 180/40. Specifically when a former NASA astronaut suffered a bizare episode in 1999 of memory loss and then memory recovery with in hours. This is a strange episode of transient global amnesia, or TGA. The cause? Unknown. Since the time the above article was written has it been figured out? Is it possible you can lower cholesterol level with a drug, yet provide no health benefits? I guess my last question would be are there any studies that show statins were beneficial for primary prevention?
