How Can Symptoms Of Dementia Be Managed In An 82-year-old?

My husband is 82. He is experiencing some symptoms of dementia. My concern in his behavior immediately upon rising. He experiences weakness, refuses to take his medicine (hides his pills, etc. in his mouth and won t swallow them) but all the while appears awake. He often will take a 1 - 2 hour nap after we get him dressed and settled after which he has no memory of the morning events.

Hi,

Balance blood sugar with a whole-foods, low-glycemic diet. He can achieve this by taking out the bad stuff (refined carbs, sugar, alcohol, caffeine, processed foods, dairy, and inflammatory, omega-6 rich oils such as vegetable and seed oils) and putting in the good stuff (healthy fats like avocados, walnuts, almonds and cashews, grass-fed meats, pastured chicken and eggs, olive and coconut oil). Eat healthy fats that make brain happy. These include omega 3 fats in wild fatty fish, as well as coconut oil, extra-virgin olive oil, avocados, whole eggs, nuts, and seeds.

Exercise daily. Even a 30-minute walk can help. High-intensity interval training or weight lifting can also be done. Studies show physical activity can prevent and even slow down the progression of cognitive decline and brain diseases like dementia.

Let him take multi-vitamin and mineral supplement, an omega 3 fat supplement, extra B6, B12, and folate, as well as vitamin D3. And, a good probiotic will enhance the brain-gut relationship.

Get his thyroid and sex hormone levels checked. If they are out of balance, you will have to get it corrected. Chronic stress takes a toll on your body and brain. Control of stress levels will be good for him. Relaxation techniques, deep breathing, meditation or yoga would help him to calm down. Getting 8 hours of sleep every night is important for him.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
