My Husband Coughs After Drinking And Smoking, What Could This Be?

My husband smoking and on the weekends will have quite a few drinks and later in the evening while he is sitting in his chair he will start cough and then his face turns red he starts to shake and starts to pass out, he doesn't go all the way out and it only lasts 10-15 seconds maybe....he says when this happens he just feels light headed, but doesn't realize how scary it is to see and doesn't think it's a big deal...I do...what could be happening?

Hello,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

High amount of alcohol use can damage esophagus & stomach directly and by increasing acidity/acid reflux. This damage lead to reflux spasm, pain in chest with cough.

Chronic smoking (irrespective of number of cigarette smoked per day) can lead to cardiac problem, damage to lungs and increase acid secretion. Increase acid production and damage to lung can cause cough and respiratory problem along with chest pain. To know the pathology, investigations like Bronchosopy and upper GI endoscopy are helpful. Sometime infection also present with similar clinical picture.

For long term treatment quit smoking/alcohol and then remain abstinent. If he are not able to stop smoking/alcohol himself, then for deaddiction he can meet nearby psychiatrist.

Wishing him good health and all the best.
