Migraine, Had A Cardiac Catheterization, Adviced Topmax. Suggestions?

My 11 year old daughter recently had a heart cath for an ASD closure/device . . . now she is having migraines. They have ruled out neuro problems and bleeds/clots. I still believe there is a correlation - any thoughts on how to handle them? Topamax was suggested but I do not want to give my daughter such a powerful drug yet.

Hi,
Thank you for posting your query.
I agree with you that the most important thing is to find out the cause of headaches. Whether is migraine or is it related to ASD closure? If ASD closure was done properly and there were no clots dislodged to the brain, and the CT/MRI scan so the brain are normal, then, it is unlikely that her headaches are due to ASD closure.

In that case, migraine as a diagnosis can be considered. If she has occasional headaches, then, intermittent analgesics may be used. However, if she has frequent headaches, then, preventive therapy with one of the medications such as beta blockers, flunarizine, divlaproex or topiramate may be considered.
I hope it helps. Please get back if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
