Menopausal. Possible Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. Loss Or Hormone Androgen?

Is it true that meibomian gland dysfunction is most prevalent in menapausal women and that the cause is the loss of the hormone Androgen? If this is true then will this get worse? Can this hormone be taken as a replacement?
I have heard some news about testosterone on the eyelids. Would this help menapausal women with meibomian gland dysfunction?

Hello and welcome to HCM.

Thank you for your query.

Yes, menopause is a common cause for dry eyes and meibomian gland dysfunction. it will get worse with progression or can even stay the same, but usually does not resolve on its own.

Some research does attribute androgen to be the cause for this, but instead of taking this hormone as a supplement (because it can cause various side effects) I would advise you to go about management with lid scrubs, eye massages, antibiotics with anti-inflammatory properties, steroid eye drops, warm compresses 2-3 times a day, packaged product capsules, etc.

I am unaware about the benefits of testosterone on the eyelids, as this is a new technique it cannot be relied on, to provide substantial benefits.

I hope I have succeeded in providing the information you were looking for. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications. I would gladly help you.

Best wishes.
