Mass Under Left Bicep. Suggested Fatty Tumor. No Pain Or Discomfort. Is Invasive Surgery Necessary?

According to my orthopedic surgeon, while examing my right shoulder recently for certain symptoms I was experiencing, noticed a mass under my left bicep, which he stated could be a fatty tumor, a condition I have had for over twenty years thinking that my left arm was developing muscle, since I work out at a gym on a regular basis, rather than a tumor. I have had absolutely no discomfort or pain during the period I've had this condition (tumor?). Is this condition serious? How is it treated? What type of specialist should I consult? Is invasive surgery necessary? Are there alternative treatments other than sugery? Any other recommendations you can suggest would be appreciated. I reside in the Boynton Beach, FL, area and if you can recommend a specialist in this area, it would also be appreciated.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Your description suggests that you have a LIPOMA (fatty mass) in your arm. These lipomas are slow growing fatty tumours that are HARMLESS. Treatment is generally not needed except when its painful or is growing causing a cosmetic blemish.

This condition is not at all serious. This is generally treated by surgical resection, steroid injections into the mass (which shrinks the mass but will not totally eliminate) or by Liposuction.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
