How Can One Prevent The Contraction Of Impetigo After Spending Time With The One Infected?
MY GRAND DAUGHTER WAS WITH US ALL WEEKEND AND SHE CAME WITH A SORE ON HER NOSE AND 2 SMALL DOTS ON HER FACE THAT LOOK LIKE PIMPLES. HER MOTHER TOOK HER TO A DR. AND HE/SHE SAID IT IS IMPETIGO. MY HUSBAND HAS DEMENTIA, LEUKEMIA, AND JUST HAD OPEN HEART SURGERY AND HAS HAD C. DIFF. TWICE. ANTIBIOTICS WILL BRING ON C. DIFF. AGAIN. WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW OR DO NOW FOR HIM AS WELL AS MYSELF. I UNDERSTAND THIS IS CONTAGIUOS. THANK YOU
Impetigo is a skin condition caused mainly by the staph. aureus bacteria. It can be highly contagious, especially considered the poor hand hygiene that children often possess. While it is unlikely that your husband has been infected with this bug, since it takes close contact for it to transfer, your worry is understandable given his medical history.
What you need to know: - Close contact is needed for infection. - Infection is highly unlikely to you or your husband. - In the next 5-7 days you may want to watch for any skin lesions and unexplained malaise or fever. - Antibiotics is not needed in this situation.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Maria Riechel-Sarup, General & Family Physician
