Lump In The Anus. No Pain. What Is It?

I have a lump that is on in the opening of my anus. It s not really painful just can feel the mass. It's skin colored I tried squeezing it to see if its an ingrown hair or something. There is no "head" By irritating it it may be swelling a bit. I haven't had a bowel movement so I can't tell you if that would be painful. What is it?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Usually painless lump in the anus area is a hemorrhoid. It should be soft, with smooth surface. It can be skin colored or can get purple. Hemorrhoid can get painful due to blood clot in it.
Other possible reason of such lump is anal fissure. However this condition gives strong pain while passing the stool. The lump outside the anus which appears with the fissure is called sentinel pile.
Both conditions are caused by constipation, pushing hard on stool. Hemorrhoid can also appear due to pregnancy.

I suggest you to increase fiber rich products and mineral water intake. Sitz baths with Quercus Cortex, hemorrhoids suppositories should be also helpful. You should also wash your rectum after every stool. This treatment can ease the symptoms of this lump, can make it smaller, but it wont disappear by itself. So the permanent cure can be surgical removal of it.

Hope this will help.
Regards.

Hi
Welcome to HCM

The lump at the opening of the anus can mainly be due to 2 reasons. the first one is the perianal abscess but it is very painful and there may be associated fever and it can enlarge in size or may rupture spontaneously.

The second one which you are most likely to be having is a pilonidal cyst which is a cyst with ingrown hair content. It is often painless but can be sometimes painful. The ultimate treatment for such cyst is surgical removal under local anesthesia. The cyst some times responds to drug therapy but reoccurs after some time. It may form a sinus later if left untreated.

Thanks
Regards
