Low Levels Of Protein, Thyroid Not Functioning Properly. Blood Test Results Show Increased Levels Of Eoisinophils. Advise?

Hi, I am a 42 yo woman and have just received blood test results that shows increased levels of Eoisinophils (63). My family doctor said that it has been increasing slowly the past 3 years and recommended i see a blood specialist. Do you have any idea what it could be? Recent medical history include low levels of Protein and thyroid not functioning properly ( but according to the recent blood test this is back to normal now)

Infants have high eosinophil count and it declines as age advances. Generally, eosinophil count varies with age, time of day, exercise status and according to the enviroinment. Eosinophils comprise less than 5% of the total WBC count.

Increase in eosinophil count is seen in allergy, asthma, hay fever, sinusitis, atopic dermatitis, worm infestations and connective tissue disorders and also in more serious conditions like Hodgekins and Non Hodgkins lymphoma. Your eosinophilia could be due to either worm infestations where such high level is possible or could be due to other serious conditions like Hodgkins. Persistent eosinophilia can cause organ damage too and needs to be attended quickly.

As your Dr has suggested, you have to consult a Hematologist to confirm the diagnosis. Finding out the cause will help in treatment. Drugs like Prednisolone and Hydroxurea are used to treat eosinophilia. Your treating Dr will know about these drugs.

You are a women of 42 years, blood test showed eoisinophils 63, your doctor refered to blood specialist. history of low protein, and hypothyroid.
Eosinofils increase will not have any hematinic problems. other causes could be worms in intestine, allergy, etc.
Still you can better consult a hematologist for the problem, and in the meanwhile you can use antelminthics, and anti eosinphilics D.E.C. for controlling the count.
