Leg Pain Due To Disc Problem In Back. Swollen Ankle. Reason For Pain?

Hi Im Tanya, I have 3 bad disc in my back that result in pain sometimes in my left leg. However lately my right leg has been having extreme pain. It almost feels like cramps . My ankle swells sometimes when I travel further south to visit my parents. But thats the only swelling . I thought the pain could be blood clots or maybe low potassium . I dont know what else it could be and I dont go back to the doctor for my back until next month. Could you give me a clue.

hi tanya,
i can feel your problem.
disc problem cause severe pain as it irritates the spinal nerves.
do the pain radiating from the back toward leg?
its called radiculopathy.
if its there then its due to nerve irritation.
swelling of ankle after prolonge sitting is not uncommon.
but probably your pain is not related to it.
if now right leg is paining then there may be aggravation of disease.
but no need to be worried.
consult your doctor early.
wish you good health.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. Saurabh Gupta's  Response
Hi,
Welcome to the forum.
You seem to have a prolapsed inter vertebral disc. This disc may be compressing upon a nerve root that either exits or traverses through that level. Having known this basic anatomy, you must avoid any activity that aggravates the condition, like bending forward and lifting heavy objects, sitting long hours on computer, inappropriate sitting posture, etc.
Ankle swelling seems due to exertion , not related to your disc problem.
I hope you haven't noted muscle weakness or loss of sensations in any particular part of leg; because if you have, you should seek immediate help.
The medications will relieve pain and help muscles to relax. Physiotherapy shall also help a lot, especially exercises that strengthen your back. Kindly note that exercises should only be done when it doesn't hurt. Adequate rest and proper nutrition is equally important. Drink lots of fluids since dehydration affects the disc.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.
