Left Foot Ankle Hurt. Is It Sprained?

I went paint balling early & while I was running, my left foot fell in a ditch & it didn't pop or anything but it feels like I rolled my ankle. I sat at one game & by the second it was fine it still hurt when I turned my ankle to the left. It feels like my ankle with pop out if I turn it a certain way. It's not that swollen, just a bit from running all day, is it broken twisted sprained? Help it feels off.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us

It might be soft tissue injury, ligament injury or fracture.

Without X-ray, it is difficult to differentiate a fracture from others. I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination. You may get the X-ray of the area affected under his/her guidance.

In the interim, apply ice packs to the affected area,anti-inflammatory drug like motrin to reduce pain and inflammation. Avoid putting weight, and rest well.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

Based on your description, I suspect that you could have suffered a ligament injury around the ankle joint. A minimum of 3 weeks of immobilization in a plaster cast or a splint may be needed.

An xray of the ankle is mandatory to ruleout any bony injury.

The preliminary management of these injuries is as follows-
- protection in the form of a splint or support
- avoid activities that produces pain
- Ice packing of the affected area to reduce the pain & swelling
- elastic compression bandage around the swollen area
- elevation of the foot end to reduce the oedema
- analgesic medications like advil or aleve as needed.

If your symptoms are not improving, consult an orthopedic surgeon for further management.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
