Late period. Family history of early menopause. Sonogram shows fibroids. What is going on?

Hi I m 45yrs old. My LH is 40 fsh is 67.6. I get my period still but they re very heavy mostly. I ve only occasionally skipped a month or it was a bit late. Meno pause in my family has always been earlier. Mom was 36 and sister was 40. Doc did a sonogram and I have only a couple of very small fibroids . He just did and endometrial biopsy and I m going crazy waiting for the results. Any ideas what can be going on with me?

Hi and welcome to HCM!

Thanks for posting your query here.

Age above 40 years, recent irregular periods with heavy bleeding suggests some pathology in uterus. It could be because of fibroids or some changes in endometrium.

Fibroids are a mass of fibrous tissue which are attached to the uterine wall. Because of the increased surface area it results in heavy bleeding. Depending on the size and site where they are the treatment varies. Small fibroids can be treated with hormones. If the size of fibroids is more the doctor can opt for surgery.

Changes in endometrium also causes irregular and heavy bleeding. An increase in the thickness of the endometrial tissue will give the clue. The most common pathology could be endometrial cancer. Dont get worried. Please wait for the confirmative report from the biopsy. Sometimes hormonal changes can cause endometrial changes. This can be treated by D&C and after with hormonal tablets.

Please get the biopsy report and you can ask for the thickness of the endometrium it guides you to the diagnosis.

Hope this helps to you.
