Knee And Shin Swollen, Soreness, Iced It, Elevates Pain. Will Pain Subside?

Hi, I fell Saturday morning (48 hours) on my knee walking the dog. My knee and shin area are still swollen. There's no pain unless these swollen areas are touched. I can walk with no pain. There are two small bruises on the knee. I iced the knee initially and elevated, but worked both Sat-Sun, which involves sitting at a desk. I tried to elevate as best I could, but it wasn't great. I really think it's fine. I'm hoping you'll tell me it just takes awhile for the swelling to go down? I've done this before say 20 years ago and never had this much swelling. I'm in my 50s now and find a lot of things with my body are completely different from when I was in my 30s.

Hi and thanks for the query,
It was appropriate for you to use the ice parks and immobilize the foot. But if the pain persists, it might require more aggressive treatment and investigation. I is important to do an X ray of the knee. The knee joint is a very complex joint, and in case of a lesion, like a fracture of the knee cap, the menisci or ligaments, early diagnosis and management are key elements that shall determine the outcome. You might need to consult your primary care physician for a clinical evaluation and X ray. Drugs like Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, both oral and local could be of help as you await a formal medical consultation.
Thanks and best regards,
Luchuo, MD.
