Itchy Throat With Cough, Occasional Breathlessness. Reasons ?

My throat itches when I look up. I had a cough for over a month which has pretty much disappeared. But i ocassionally get these coughing fits where I can t breathe and have to try to relax so that my throat relaxes. I had a coughing fit last week where I passed out. It s really strange since the cough can dissappear for a few hours, but as soon as I get into any cold weather it starts up again.

Hello and welcome to HCM

The presence of persistent cough and itching in the throat points towards 'dry cough'.
Dry cough is the cough which is not associated with sputum production.
causes of dry cough are:
1. Chronic respiratory infections
2. Asthma
3. Bronchitis
4. COPD
5. Common in patients with cystic fibrosis

Dry cough gets worse during sleep and after exertion.
The above mentioned factors cause irritation and thus cause the cough reflex.

The treatment of dry cough is to suppress this cough reflex.
This is done by syrups which act by suppressing this reflex and provide soothing effect to the throat.
Taking the syrup at night is beneficial as they also contain mild sedatives which help the individual to have a good and undisturbed sleep at night. This will give symptomatic relief.

However, if you have any of the above mentioned problem then treating the underlying cause is important.

Thanks and take care

Hi,
Thank you for your query and Welcome to HCM community.

I think, you have got New Onset Asthma / Cough Variant asthma. Whenever you get into cold weather, your airway hyperrespond & the lumen contracts and you develop coughing and breathing problem, that suggest you have asthma.

Upper respiratory tract infection or allergy often produce fluid into your nose that goes back deep into your throat where it irritates the lining of your airway and make an itchy feeling as well as a lot of coughing that you complained.

You will be benefited by Bronchodilator inhaler (needs prescription) specially during attack.

Your Blood Eosinophil count may be high.

Consult with a doctor for complete management.

Hope, this helps.
