Itchy red bumps on left arm to shoulder. Applied ointments, dead skin peeled, stinging raised bumps. Suggestions?

I have raised itchy red bumps on my left arm up to my shoulder. I scratched it until it caused an open sore. I have applied ointments to stop the itching and so that it can heal. Now a week later it has scabbed up and it seems that dead skin is starting to peel away. Sometimes the raised bumps sting as well. What could it be?
