Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Weight Loss Necessary Before Having A Total Knee Replacement?
I need total knee replacement but instead the doctor prescribed a wheelchair and told me he would not do any surgery until and unless my weight got below 240 pounds. Is the a common criteria because I was doing 10,000 steps per day when he turned me down and exercising 4-1/2 hours per week to be a good surgery candidate. Now I don t even bother to count steps an pain wise I am near the point I may have to cut back walking in water from 1-1/2 hours per session to 1 hour. I have been at close to the same weight now for about a decade with no weight related problems. I am an early senior citizen (under 70) and weight less than 300 pounds but at a height of 64 inches, so you could say I have a height deficit if being funny. I gained the weight the doctor wants me to lose entirely from high dose steroid treatment for a work injury, but it has persisted.
Hello. The weight situation is appropriate when considering a knee replacement, but there is no specific criteria where weight would preclude the surgery so perhaps you should be consulting a different surgeon
