Is Warfarin Advisable Having A History Of Blood Clots?

My husband has a history of blood clots and is on Warfarin. His level is safe between 2 & 3 and he has been staying right there for over a year. He just had a blood work up and the level increased to 3.5. We have been racking our brains trying to figure out what foods we have eaten that could have affected his level. These are the only things we can think of that we don t normally eat. We had a tuna fish sandwich for lunch one day. He had quite a bit of sunflower seeds last weekend, we had some canteloupe and maybe went over our egg limit when I made some egg salad. Other than this, we cannot think of anything at all that he has done differently. Our doctor s office hasn t called back and this is driving us insane. Can you help us out? Thanks, Karen & Robin Kelly

Hello,

Yes, it is a blood thinner. The formation of a clot in the body is a complex process that involves multiple substances called clotting factors.

Warfarin decreases the body's ability to form blood clots by blocking the formation of vitamin K–dependent clotting factors.

Warfarin dosing is highly individualized and not based on a patient’s weight. Warfarin requires regular monitoring to ensure that blood clotting time or prothrombin time is within the correct range.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. AJEET SINGH
