Is Ureaplasma Parvum A Serious Disease?

OK, here we go... My girlfriend just told me that she is infected with something called Ureaplasma Parvum. It is apparently transmitted through sex. Her doctor gave both of us a prescription for Doxycycline. I never heard of this bacteria. Is this serious?

Hi
Thank you for asking HCM.
I have gone through your query. Ureaplasma infection is not that serious. It can be treated effectively with antibiotics. This is the causative agent for non gonococcal urethritis. Doxycycline is the first line therapy for this. You both should take doxycycline therapy and have follow up with your doctor. If in follow up culture there is still presence of Ureaplasma then antibiotics like clindamycin or clarithromycin will be helpful. Only if it is not treated well it can cause infertility.
Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
