Is There Any Substitute Medicine Available For Liothyronine Sodium Taken For Thyroid Problems?

Dr. Grief, I have Graves Disease and am on the prescription Liothyronine sodium 25 mcg tablets, once in the am on an empty stomach. I had my thyroid ablated in 2001, I am 75 years old. I need to be on these meds as I need to keep my thyroid level stable. I paid $35 in October, 2013 for 180 pills, for 3 months. the prescription will now cost me $116.03 for the same meds. I can't afford this. Do you have any suggestions for substitutions for me? thank you........Barbara Volkman

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Lidothyronine sodium is one of the medications used for hypothyroidism. It is available in different generic formats.
It is possible that you were given a more expensive formulation of the medication.

You may want to consider speaking to your pharmacist to find out if there are less expensive forms available.
Additionally speak to your doctor about the issue to see if he or she could suggest a form of the medication that would be less expensive.

I hope this helps
