Is There Any Side Effects For Pause 500 In Pregnancy?

My wife is 5.5 wks pregnant and she started bleeding since yest afternoon. We visited our doc last evening and he suggested Progestrone vaginal inserts, which we started administering once a day since last night. Her bleeding has increased since this morning and is bright red - no pains as yet. We consulted our doctor aging and he suggested to increase the dose of progesterone to twice daily and start Pause 500 twice daly. Got some confusing references from websites on side effect of pause on pregnancy. Will appreciate guidance

Hi,

Pause 500 is Tranexamic acid which is anti-fibrinolytics in nature used to reduce the amount of blood loss after delivery, reduce requirement for blood transfusion and reduce the duration of any type of bleeding. It is considered safe to use but there are limited human studies. So it is difficult to say what are the specific side effects on pregnant women and their bearing infants if they take this medication during their pregnancy periods. But there are some common and some serious side effects of this medication that can be happened in both pregnant and non pregnant status.

The most common side effects are headache, back pain, abdominal pain, muscle pain, joint pain, fatigue, anaemia, sinus and nasal problems, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea etc. There are some serious side effects which need immediate medical attentions such as serious allergic reactions like rash, itching, swelling of face, tongue, throat etc, respiratory distress, chest tightness etc, vision changes like decreased vision, colour vision changes etc, coughing up blood, stroke, fainting etc.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. David J Girardi's  Response
Hello,

Pause 500 is a type of medication used to stop bleeding and in the case of your wife the physician's though was that it would reduce the chances of a miscarriage. There are very limited scientific studies where this has been used for this purpose but the medication is generally considered safe in pregnancy and shows a very low or no adverse effect profile towards the baby.

Miscarriages are tough and once the process starts their isn't any way to really stop it. This is one situation where your physician is thinking outside the box and I really tend to agree that it is probably worth the risk especially if the bleeding was increasing. Generally I have used this medication in the hospital to halt internal bleeding of patients where there was no other way to stop the blood loss. It does work and in this case I feel it is worth the effort to try.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
