Is There Any Side Effects For Nexium?

My daughter has been on Nexium for about a year. She has had a cough since Nov. 2013, local doctors can t seem to find why she has a cough. I remember a cough I had developed due to a medication reaction, could she be experiencing the same thing with the Nexium?

Hi & Welcome.

Nexium (Esomeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor that suppresses the production of acid in the stomach and is commonly prescribed to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastritis, stomach ulcer and other conditions involving excessive stomach.

Nexium is generally a safe medication however, it may cause osteoporosis (thinning of the bones), intestinal infections, and deficiency of vitamin B12 on prolonged use.

It is unlikely to cause persistent cough, in fact it is prescribed for the persistent cough, heartburn, and difficulty in swallowing associated with GERD.

Your daughter needs to be evaluated to rule out other causes of cough such as allergy or breathing problems associated with bronchial asthma.

Hope this answers your query.
